First of all, Singapore has been a gateway to the world for me on several journeys to Australia and New Zealand. In particular, it became one of those places that was far more than simply a stop on the way somewhere else.

On each visit, the contrast stood out. On the one hand, Singapore felt incredibly clean, modern and precise; however, its older colonial character gave the city another completely different personality.

For example, I remember stepping into the Long Bar at Raffles Hotel, where tradition seemed to take over. In particular, peanut shells scattered across the wooden floor created an unforgettable contrast with the spotless streets outside.
